Playground, or English on the carpet
The Playground games package is the newest project of Centrum 4ELT prepared in cooperation with the Polish company Funtronic, producer of the Magic Carpet technology. Playground language games are aimed at children aged 6 – 10, studying English at A1+ level in primary schools.
Learning through movement
The Magic Carpet device allows you to learn through movement and therefore it is fantastic for language practice using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method. Playground games expose children to rich language in a stress-free and fun environment.
For teachers
Playground games can be used in various ways at different stages of the lesson: for example, as a warm-up, to raise energy in the group, to introduce a new topic or to present new vocabulary or as a revision.
The Playground package has been enriched with sample lesson plans that demonstrate how you can use games to practice all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. On Facebook you can find videos showing how the games are played.
From the author
„The story of Playground began long before the Magic Carpet was created. In 1991, together with Gosia Horała, we published the first English textbook for children in Poland under the same title. The book was accompanied by cassettes with recordings and an exercise book, which was a novelty at the time! We knew even then that movement and interaction with the world help the youngest to learn a language in the most natural way. So our goal was to engage children during lessons by cutting, coloring, playing and listening. The “magic” of the Magic Carpet, which delighted me at the first contact with this technology, is the possibility to present various pictures, places and stories to students, who can then interact with the rich world – all without leaving the classroom.”
